Formerly a top fashion model, almost 5'10'' tall, Carey was an a fan favorite of the top American fashion designers like Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. In 1979, the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists voted her dad Scientist of the Year. The father of Carey was a geologist and traveled the globe as a part of his career. As she was attending an institution called the University of Colorado, Carey began to model on the side. The Ford Model Agency in New York noticed her and was willing to assist. She moved to France in 1980 and lived briefly in Paris and Bordeaux before deciding to return in New York to continue with her studies at the college level and her modeling career. She soon began being featured on the cover of Vogue, Glamour, etc. As she modeled and continued to pursue her studies full-time for a literature major in New York University. Then she became interested in acting, and began taking classes at the Neighborhood Playhouse of New York. In 1986 she had her first performance, a bit part in Club Paradise, with Robin Williams. White water rafting, skiing and rock climbing are her favorite pursuits.
